lyrics

They told me a photographer
would come and take my picture for
a story in the paper the next week.
He said, “Meet me tonight at that little bar down the street.”

I noticed him as I walked in;
his cam’ra told me this was him.
I saw a man not quite still in his prime.
He said, “Order a drink and then tell me your life and times.”

I shared a story from my life,
about someone I didn’t like,
and that’s when this old man took me to task.
He said, “Liking someone is like taking their photograph.

You’ve gotta find their good side,
find their good side.
Don’t leave till you’ve got ’em from their good side.
One side will be kinder.
Your job is to find a person’s good side.”

The man worked fast, the man worked clean,
and when he’d got that shot of me,
he checked his watch, then gulped his whiskey down,
and said, “Son, I can’t stay. Got a poker game way ’cross town.”

As well as a photographer,
I’d met me a philosopher,
and he said what to say on his behalf.
He said “Liking someone is like taking their photograph.

You’ve gotta find their good side,
find their good side.
Don’t leave till you’ve got ’em from their good side.
One side will be kinder.
Your job is to find a person’s good side.”
